Over at skateass.com, they wrote a blog post on Airsoft Sniper Tactics. I would recommend reading it to get some basic ideas on sniper tactics. They talk a lot about the guns used by snipers so if your intresested in becoming a sniper in the sport of airsoft you should read this to understand what type of airsoft gun to use.

Airsoft guns are spring, electric, or gas powered air guns that fire small spherical plastic pellets of either 6 mm or 8 mm diameter, although spring-operated “air guns” may be disputed as air guns altogether. Inexpensive airsoft guns are often very low powered and some players use them as professional airsoters would, but instead they play in areas like a house’s backyard (usually unsafely by the uninformed younger players). Some of the more expensive models may be used for playing professional Airsoft, which is similar in concept to Paintball, with the exception that airsoft is a military simulation that usually has objectives instead of constant ‘deathmatches.’

Generally they are replicas of real firearms, but occasionally fictional firearms or body kits are available, such as the M41A Pulse Rifle from the Aliens films. Some very inexpensive airsoft guns are reduced scale models or caricatures of firearms. In addition, some designs are replicas of firearms that never even went into service or production, such as XM8 prototypes.

While in essence the three types of airsoft guns, spring, gas, and electric, all work on the same principle of compressed gas expanding to force a pellet down the gun’s barrel, each type has its own advantages and disadvantages.
